March Madness: New Albums for the Start of Spring

Thank god February is over. Just about the only good thing about these 28 days was the number of great albums that came out that I got to listen to. (And seeing Anthony Braxton on Feb 27 didn’t hurt either – more to come on that later.) The release schedule for February was packed, and included several albums that I anticipate will end up on several year end best-of lists: Rudresh Mahanthappa’s tribute to Charlie Parker, entitled Bird Calls; the latest from the Vijay Iyer Trio; Matana Roberts’ Coin Coin Chapter Three: River Run Thee; and the final studio recording from Kenny Wheeler. And that just scratches the surface of what February had to offer.

February’s releases were strong. But March’s release schedule is absolutely bananas. Here’s a preview of a few of the many albums I’m looking forward to coming out this month.
